The Aare Ona Kakanfo designate of Yoruba land, Dr. Gani Adams, has said understanding and embracing one’s culture is key to liberation. He therefore urged the Yoruba not be weary of promoting their culture in order to have a proper understanding of life.

Adams spoke while playing host to prominent culture ambassador and popular actor, Chief Jimoh Aliu, in his Lagos home. He commended the actor for setting up the Jimoh Aliu Cultural Foundation, saying, “No one exalts his culture and fades away.”

Urging Aliu to do more, he said it would be calamitous for people to stop propagating their culture. “If you stop promoting your culture, the spirits of your race that are supposed to work to your advantage will leave.”

Adams decried neglect of the Yoruba culture, saying: “We are only still existing by grace, because a lot of damage has been done to our culture and we should not abuse the grace but retrace our steps. The time is now to recover from the injury of the past and promote our culture, so that we can assume our rightful place in the scheme of things.”
