‘Ganduje is committed to press freedom in Kano’
Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje of Kano State has pledged his commitment to press freedom in the state.
The state Commissioner for Information, Mohammed Garba disclosed this yesterday at a conference to mark the World Press Day.
The conference was organised by the National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ).
Garba, who is a former President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), said the governor was committed to sustaining the existing cordial relationship with the media.
He said his promise was based on the sanctity and constitutional responsibility of media practitioners globally.
According to the commissioner, Ganduje’s policies are subjected to media scrutiny in line with his administration’s philosophy of transparency and accountability in governance.
Garba disclosed that the governor would soon revive the state-owned Triumph newspaper, which is expected to hit the newsstands soon.
The former NUJ President promised that journalists would not suffer any form of intimidation in their duties, despite the unethical practices among some media practitioners.
Meanwhile, the state council of the NUJ Nigeria has expressed worry at the increasing spate of attacks on journalists in the country.
The union cited the recent killing of a journalist in Bayelsa State by unknown gunmen and the attack on NTA Kano’s reporter.
