No fewer than three people, including a student  of Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), were killed in multiple crashes in Akure, Ondo State capital on Monday night.

The accident involving the student, occurred near the Catholic Cathedral, along the popular Oyemekun Road, Akure, while the  other  happened around Sabo, Lipakala Area of the town.

As a result of the accident, FUTA students blocked the Akure-Ilesha-Ibadan highway, to register their grievances, causing traffic gridlock.

They also set bonfires at the entrance and locked all access gates to the university, claiming that the negligence of the school health workers caused the death of their colleague, Daniel Akinyele, a 200 Level student in the Software Engineering Department.

The Guardian learnt that five students of the institution were involved in the lone crash.

According to sources, the deceased, Akinyele, died before he could be rushed to the hospital.

He was said to be first taken to the school clinic but the security personnel reportedly refused to open the gate for them.

The Students Union Government (SUG) had declared yesterday  lecture-free to mourn the deceased student but it turned to a large protest against the alleged negligence and insensitivity of the school’s security personnel.

Meanwhile,  the Registrar, Mr. Richard Arifalo, in a statement yesterday, described the death as “unfortunate and regrettable.”

The institution has also set up a probe into the circumstance that led to the incident.
