Pacelli School for the Blind and Partially Sighted Children held its end-of-the-year party. It was organised by the Catholic Mission and other humanitarian groups to celebrate children with visual impairment.

The event, which attracted religious leaders, cooperate organisations, alumni of the school, parents and guardians, featured fun activities such as talent hunt, singing, dancing, acting and vocational art exhibition.

An alumnus of the school, Nneka Ojieh, who is now an employees of the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria, said she came to the institution as a rehabilitation student, feeble and vulnerable but was given hope and future.

Nneka said parents of disabled children should encourage and push their children to showcase their God-given talents, noting that there were lots of talents embedded in every child.

The chairman of the occasion, Mr. Anthony Matuluko, who celebrated his last birthday with the kids, said the society needed to be educated on how to handle visually impaired persons. He noted that the media has important role to play in propagating and educating parents of children with visual and physical disorders.

The principal of the school, Rev. Sister Jane Onyeneri acknowledged the support and love shown by organisations, individuals, schools, religious bodies and the Lagos state government.

“Our students have been achieving great in their academics. This year we scored 100 percent in NECO and state examinations,” she said.
According to her, Pacelli school students came first in the Lagos state quiz competition.

Highlighting some of the challenges the school faces while caring for the children, she said funding is one of their major challenges because the school is a non-fee paying institution.

“The Federal Government in years past gave subvention occasionally but to our greatest surprise, it has ceased coming”.

Onyeneri thanked the Lagos state governor for the donation of a coaster bus to the children, and appealed to the federal and state governments to keep supporting the institution.
