FRSC will partner traffic agencies to enforce “Okada’’ restriction laws — Lagos Sector Commander

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says it will collaborate with other agencies to enforce the existing laws restricting the movement of commercial motorcyclists to the hinterland in Lagos State.

The Sector Commander of the commission in the state, Mr Hygenius Omeje, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday that the commission was poised to ensure that commercial motorcyclists complied with the state traffic laws.

“The Lagos traffic law is still very much in force.

“You will also notice that there is a task force already in place; we are working with them to ensure that we take them (commercial motorcyclists) back to where they belong – that is, within the hinterland where BRT (Bus Rapid Transport) and all other buses don’t have access.

“So, there is also an enforcement unit in that regard and we are working in partnership with other task force to ensure that we push them (commercial motorcyclists) off the major highways.’’

NAN reports that the Lagos State Road Traffic Law was enacted in 2012 thereby banning commercial motorcyclists, popularly known as Okada, and tricycles, as well as carts and wheelbarrow operators from working on some routes in the state.

The routes include, Lagos-Ibadan Express road; Oworonsoki-Oshodi Expressway; Lagos-Ikorodu Expressway; Abeokuta Expressway; and the Third Mainland Bridge, amongst others.
