The Kano Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on Friday commenced sensitisation of drivers on its plan to start conducting psychological tests for traffic offenders in the state.

The Acting Sector Commander of the FRSC in Kano, Alhaji Ahmed Tijjani, while flagging-off the campaign at Kano Line Motor Park, said the exercise was necessary to enlighten the drivers on offences that could subject an offender to such test.

According to Tijjani, some of the offences that can lead to drivers undergoing psychological test include over-loading, excessive speed, using mobile phone while driving and beating of traffic light.

He said it had become habitual for some road users to violate traffic rules and regulations, and such action must be checked.

Tijjani said the planned psychological tests would be carried out at designated medical facilities with a view to finding out the offender’s mental ability, in view of the loss of lives being recorded during accidents in the state.

“Any motorist who commits one or multiple offences shall be deemed reasonably suitable to undergo such psychological test.

“Therefore, we are calling on them to respect traffic laws in order to avoid being subjected to the examination process that can lead to the withdrawal of their drivers’ licences,” he said.

Tijjani pledged to collaborate with the state government to tackle the problem of illegal motor parks, following complaints by the leaders at the genuine motor parks.

In his response, the Chairman of the Kano Line Motor Park, Alhaji Muttaqa Bala, represented by Alhaji Ibrahim Tiga, commended the FRSC for their commitment to enforcement of traffic laws.

“I am proud to say that our members are law abiding and will continue to be, therefore, we are calling on the state and the Federal Government to ensure that all illegal motor parks in the country are stopped,” he said.

Bala charged the FRSC to ensure serious sanctions against their officers found guilty of processing fake drivers’ licences for motorists.
