Four policemen arrested in Delta State for ‘reckless shooting, killing’
• Port Harcourt command rescues 18 kidnap victims, arrests 36 suspects
For allegedly engaging in professional misconduct and murder, the Delta State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Zanna Ibrahim, has ordered the immediate arrest, detention and investigation of four policemen.Ibrahim gave the directive in Asaba yesterday following report that the erring policemen shot three persons during a child dedication at the weekend in Warri.
The policemen, Inspectors Samuel Imana and Anthony Nwali, Sergeant Anthony Oniri and Corporal Innocent Ajah, attached to the Area Commander’s office in Warri, had during a child dedication at Edjewo, by Poloko market, allegedly engaged in shooting, which resulted in the death of Mr. Elvis Ovie, and two others injured last Sunday, September 17.
The command, which is highly disturbed at the apparently reckless shooting by the policemen, vowed that appropriate sanctions would be meted out to the erring law enforcement agents after investigation is concluded.
Meanwhile, the Rivers State Police Command has rescued 18 kidnap victims from various hoodlums’ hideouts in the state. The victims were rescued by men of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit (AKU), during a raid.
The command also arrested 36 hoodlums suspected to be involved in kidnapping and other criminal activities in the state. The Commissioner of Police, Zaki Ahmed, while parading the suspects yesterday at the command’s headquarters in Moscow, Port Harcourt, said 11 of the hoodlums were involved in kidnapping and 10 in armed robbery.
Among the suspects were a fake police Sergeant, Benjamin Tanko. The police boss said the fake officer was caught in a police camouflage at the Oil Mill Market committing felony.
According to Ahmed, the suspect claimed to be an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), attached to the Port Harcourt Command. Also, a female lawyer, Elizabeth Agboje, was arrested by the Human Rights Officer of the command, Emmanuel Ukwenya, for “consistently torturing and assaulting little Miss Bright Maxson.”
He said the suspect accused the nine-year-old victim of being a witch and thief. The suspect was also said to have subjected the girl to all manners of degrading treatments for the past seven years.
