Unaddressed hearing loss poses an annual global cost of US$ 750 billion, a report has indicated. Kemi Remi-Dairo Hearing Foundation, a non-profit organisation with the aim of providing medical treatment platform, access to financial/technical support and education on hearing loss, has this known.

Promoter of the foundation, Kemi Remi-Dairo, said the group is working with a special team that consists of otology surgeons, audiologists, a speech-language pathologist, an educational consultant, international bodies and psychologists to tackle the problems of hearing loss in the country.

She made this known on Sunday at the launch of her book ‘My Silence World’. The 166-page book captured the agony the author went through for five years when she lost her hearing.

Kemi noted that people suffering from such problem are often stigmatized. She urged parents to bring forward their wards if early signs of hearing loss is discovered for treatment. She stated that hearing loss has different stages, which can be mild, moderate, severe or profound. The profound stage according to her, leads to deafness.

The foundation and its services were also launched and unveiled to the public. The foundation said it has a mission to create avenues that put a stop to intense and high increase in hearing loss and ear problems in Nigeria.

It said it intends to achieve this with the help of medical and surgical treatment, awareness creation on prevention of noise pollution, providing hearing technologies, speech and hearing rehabilitation and educational support to those financially incapable.
