Gunmen, suspected to be assasins, yesterday attacked the home of the former Acting Governor of Bayelsa State, Chief Wenipreye Seibarugu.

The gunmen reportedly scaled the fence of his expansive compound and tried to gain access to his building through the back at about 2:00 a.m.

Seibarugu, whose home is at Okaka, Yenagoa, the state capital, was a two-time Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, deputy governor to Chief Timipre Sylva and acting governor of the state.

He is also a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Guardian gathered that the gunmen, numbering five, who were masked, shot sporadically and created panic among occupants of the house and the politician’s neighbours.

They were sighted by wife of the former acting governor from the kitchen who raised the alarm that attracted the husband and others in the house.

The gunmen were repelled by security operatives, including the police orderly to the former acting governor and youths living in some flats in the compound.

Confirming the development to newsmen, Seibarugu, who sustained a fracture in his left arm, described the attack as “worrisome.”

He said: “I just got back from Port Harcourt and was woken up by cry of my wife that armed robbers were trying to gain entrance. We chased after them but they escaped.”

He admitted that he had not reported to the police as he had been in the hospital receiving treatment.

However, policemen from the Ekeki Divisional Headquarters led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) visited the house yesterday at about 4.30 p.m. to ascertain the development.
