What could have resulted in a major fire incident in the Enugu metropolis in the early hours of yesterday was averted following the quick intervention of the Enugu State Fire Service.

The campaign headquarters of the state All Progressives Congress (APC) factional governorship candidate, George Ogara, had been engulfed by fire before the fire fighters intervened.

Incidentally, the campaign office, which had been locked up for sometime now is located beside the office of Senator Ayogu Eze, who has been recognised by the party and Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as the state APC governorship candidate.

The fire partly burnt two branded campaign vehicles of Ogara with President Muhammadu Buhari and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama’s photographs on the premises.

Also, the windscreens of three other buses were smashed, thereby creating the impression that yet unidentified persons may have started the fire.

Chief Fire Officer in Enugu State, Okwudili Ohaa, who confirmed the incident, said it occurred about 2 a.m. yesterday.

“We responded promptly by fighting the fire to a standstill and prevented it from spreading to other buildings and vehicles. We put out the inferno with two fire engines,” he said.

Speaking, Enugu Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Ebere Amaraizu, also confirmed the incident, stressing that the police had already commenced a detailed investigation of the incident.

Meanwhile, the Ambode Mandate Support Group (AMSG), held a rally to reaffirm support for the Lagos State All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, insisting that its members have not defected as being speculated in the state.

Director General of the group, Akeem Sulaimon, said the rally, which started from the Lagos State secretariat to APC secretariat, was to affirm that Governor Akinwunmi Ambode was fully in support of Sanwo-Olu.

The supporters, drawn from the 57 local governments and development areas, said Lagos residents who love Ambode should vote Sanwo-Olu, saying a vote for the APC governorship candidate was a vote for Ambode.

Thousands of the governor’s supporters who were received by the State APC Chairman, Tunde Balogun, and other state executive officers of the party attended the rally.
