Minister of Science and Technology Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu and his counterpart for Mines and Steel Development Dr. Uchechukwu Ogah have urged Nigerian entrepreneurs to invest in methanol production in the country, even as they listed the benefits of doing so.

The ministers spoke in Umuahia, Abia State capital yesterday during the sensitisation for the Southeast stakeholders on the implementation of the national policy on methanol fuel production technology that the Federal Executive Council approved on October 23 , 2019.

Speaking separately during the event, they said that methanol production is very important to the economy of the nation hence it will improve the peoples standard of living, help create new jobs and even protect the environment.

Onu said that now that the world is gradually reducing its reliance on crude oil, Nigeria with her position as the world 9th largest natural gas reserves, should start preparing for the future by strengthening its revenue base in response to the current trend in the world.

“The methanol policy offers us opportunity to better utilise our enormous natural gas resources. Methanol can be produced from natural gas which contains as high as 85% methane.”
