Nigeria yesterday commenced the process of teaching mathematics and science subjects in the local languages.

Nigeria yesterday commenced the process of teaching mathematics and science subjects in the local languages.

Minister of Science and Technology, Ogbonnaya Onu inaugurated an inter-ministerial committee to map out the logistics for the implementation of the project.

Members were picked from the ministries of science and technology; and education.

Onu said the committee would work out modalities to develop science textbooks in local languages and train teachers that would teach students in the science using local languages.

He noted that all over the world, countries that have advanced in mathematics and science were teaching it to their children in their local languages.

“Nigeria is endowed with major mineral resources and knowledge is required to extract them for development,” he said, adding that teaching science in local languages will help the understanding and improve its knowledge for the extraction of the minerals that will in the long run improve the economy.

Onu added that the nation’s currency has been under so much pressure because of excessive importation and assured that with a better understanding of the sciences, more innovations and local production can take place in the country, thereby helping the country’s economy.
