Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi, has disclosed Federal Government’s plans to build deep seaports at Bonny, in Rivers State, Warr, in Delta State, and Lekki in Lagos State.

He disclosed this while receiving members of the Governing Board, Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), led by the Chairman, Hon. Mai Mala Buni. He said the proposal is part of efforts to decongest the gridlock on Apapa road in Lagos.

The minister explained that the problem had persisted over the years because ports in the country are mere river ports, with neither depth nor the capacity to berth large ships.

Amaechi explained that with the approval by President Muhammadu Buhari to build the deep seaports, importers from Aba, Onitsha or Port Harcourt would no longer need to import cargoes through the Apapa ports. He added that the situation would save man-hours that are wasted in trying to clear goods and transport them to final destinations.

He urged all agencies and stakeholders involved in port operations to deliver on their responsibilities. Buni, commended the minister for the support given to the board, and promised to formulate policies that would, help NSC to fulfill its statutory role, diversify the economy, create employment and uplift the standard of living of the people.
