THE Federal Government has disclosed intention to explore opportunities in science and technology to build a “strong, sustainable and competitive economy” as well as ensure better living standards for Nigerians.

Speaking yesterday in Benin City at an event organised by the University of Benin (UNIBEN) in collaboration with the Lancaster University, United Kingdom, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Science and Technology, Mrs. Winifred Oyo-Ita charged scientists and academics to embark on studies that are technologically driven to create jobs, “improve the economy and general power for industrial growth.”

In a paper titled, “Deployment and Commercialization of Research Output,” Oyo-Ita lamented that “the problem facing us as a nation is power supply both in our industry and for domestic consumption. As a result, billions of naira are spent on importation of generating sets. Some of these are simple equipment that our researchers can work on and produce locally, thereby creating employment and preserving our scarce resource which can be channelled into profitable ventures.

“I would therefore enjoin you scientists on the need to promote problem-solving and market driven research and to ensure maximum benefit of research outputs to the federal, states and local government areas and even individual homes and lives because this administration is determined to use science and technology to improve the lives of Nigerians”.

UNIBEN Vice Chancellor, Prof. Faraday Orumwense had earlier stressed the need to “urgently fast-track the growth and development of our industries on a sustainable basis,” adding that “ I must express my delight on the fact that our own UNIBEN is leading this drive under the current management team”.

Other dignitaries at the event included the institution’s Pro-Chancellor, Senator Effiong Dickson Bob, representative of the UK varsity, Prof. Kirk Semple and a host of academics from the university and other institutions across the federation
