To sharpening their skills in the area of using collaborative methods to develop the agricultural sector, over 40 Directors of Agricultural Extension Services have undergone a Value Chain Development (VCD) training programme, at the Agricultural and Rural Management Training Institute (ARMTI), Ilorin, Kwara State.

The VCD, pioneered about six years ago by ARMTI lays emphasis on building synergy along the chains of farming through production and marketing.
Besides, 50 youths and women from Rivers State, simultaneously undergone intensive training on Agribusiness at the institute, towards achieving self sustenance and food security for its people.

While addressing the joint participants, the Executive Director of ARMTI, Dr. Olufemi Oladunni said the Federal Government’s drive on economic diversification from over dependence on petroleum to agriculture remained the only hope for the nation to come out of its present economic quagmire.

“ARMTI has been playing leading roles in this economy diversification mission through the strengthening of the Agriculture and Rural Development (ARD) sector. Two basic strategies are critical to the achievement of the capacity of the actors in the agricultural sector, and the perfection of the agricultural practices being deployed nationwide. This two-pronged strategy is what ARMTI is strongly positioned to execute and we have on a steady march through the nooks and cranny of this country, carrying out these critical interventions.

“At present, we are commencing two programmes. A zonal intervention training programme towards improving the capabilities of the selected participants on Agribusiness for women and youths in Rivers State. This programme like similar ones all over the nation had the capacity to transform not only the lives of the participants involved, but the entire community and region as a whole.”

The ARMTI boss urge the participants to see the programme as a life time opportunity and thus grab it with both hands, adding that all must play their roles, putting the nation’s economy on a good footing among the comity of nations.

At the closing of the one-week training, power packs were presented to the participants, just as the extensions workers drawn across the federating units of Nigeria were reminded of the need for constant training and re-training as the only way to achieve sustainable development.

Oladunni stressed that extension workers are best positioned to ensure the proper spread of the VCD message.
