Federal lawmakers task President Buhari on knotty issues

President Muhammadu Buhari

The South East Caucus in the National Assembly has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to address the knotty issues that gave rise to the agitation in the zone. They cited the alleged marginalisation of‎ the area in federal appointments and siting of major capital projects.

Rising from a meeting yesterday in Abuja, the federal lawmakers affirmed their support for the unity of Nigeria anchored on justice, equality and fairness.

The caucus leader and Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu and representative of Abia South in the upper chamber of the National Assembly, Eyinnaya Abaribe, have however called on the leadership and members of the organistion to cease fire, to enable them explore political solutions to the ongoing face-off.

In a communiqué, the lawmakers also rejected the tagging of group as a terrorist outfit, adding that such labelling portends grave consequences for entire geopolitical zone.

The caucus argued that the categorisation would affect the people and foreclose dialogue with the relevant authorities.Signed by Abaribe and Chukwuka Onyema, the document reads in part: “We call on IPOB to suspend all its activities as we engage our colleagues in the National Assembly in addressing all issues of concern to the entire South East.

“We appreciate the efforts of the governors and the leadership of Ohaneze Ndigbo in the handling of the agitations in the region with regard to the confrontations of the military with IPOB, especially in Abia State.”

It continued: “We condemn all acts of terrorism. In the case of IPOB, we reject the branding of any organisation in Nigeria without due process. “We take this position because of the implication of such branding to innocent citizens from the area who maybe affected by the consequences.”
