The immediate past deputy governor of Ekiti State, Professor Kolapo Olusola, has disagreed with the state government that it was Governor Kayode Fayemi’s administration that rescued the education sector in the state.

Kolapo, who was the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the last governorship election, advised Fayemi of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to continue with the good policies of his predecessor, Ayodele Fayose, rather than demonise and cast aspersion on the administration. He was reacting to a statement credited to Fayemi at the commissioning of a block of classroom built by the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) at Methodist Nursery/Primary School, Ikere Ekiti on Thursday.

Fayemi, who was represented by the House of Assembly Speaker, Mr. Funminiyi Afuye, at the event, had said: “We are not comfortable with that 12th position. Education was on the bare ground in 2010 when we came for the first term. We lifted it to be one of the best before 2014.“We renovated about 182 public schools and substantial improvement came before 2014 when Ekiti went to sleep. There is a new sheriff in town; that is Dr. Kayode Fayemi, and education will be back to its pride of place.”

But Kolapo said, “By 2014, percentage pass of Ekiti in the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) of West African Examination Council (WAEC) was 25 per cent, improved to 33 per cent in 2015, 42 per cent in 2016, and which we took to over 70 per cent in 2017 and 2018.He also highlighted the success of Ekiti under the Fayose-led administration.

“Ekiti came first back-to-back in NECO SSCE in 2016, 2017 and 2018 with percentage pass of 96, 85 end 90.61 respectively,” he argued. The professor further counselled the state government on how to return the state’s lost glory in the education sector. His words, “Fayemi should continue with good policies of intervention lectures in mathematics and production of compedia of five-year past questions in 11 subjects which were given freely to SSS 3 students in both private and public schools.”

“In fact, the low percentage in 2016 was as a result of widespread fake online maths exam expo that deceived the students. We then mounted serious campaign against exam malpractice, which yielded expected results in subsequent years with students focusing more on their studies than relying on expos.”In a slight dig, he said, “Going about commissioning projects completed by the Fayose/Eleka administration is a sheer waste of time. Ekiti people are not deceived.”
