A 22 year old student of Benue State Polytechnic, Ugbokolo, Benue State, Christopher Ngbede Ameh has been murdered by the police, according to the boy’s father.

In a petition written by counsel to the deceased’s father, E.J. Igoche Esq for father of the deceased, Abel Ameh and made available to The Guardian, it said the incident which occurred since 2nd July, 2017 is yet to receive any attention from the State Police Command.

The letter, which is also addressed to the Inspector General of Police, the Assistant Inspector of Police, Zone 4 Makurdi as well as the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), it urged the mentioned authorities to act in the interest of justice and to fish out bad eggs from the force.

Narrating the ordeal that led to the murder of his son, Ameh said, “On that black day, some youths came and told me that my son had been arrested for allegedly harassing a young lady with a gun. The next day, the police came and searched my house without a search permit but did not find anything. I went to the station to bail my son but they refused even as they granted bail to two others who were arrested with him.

Ameh added that when he went to give food to his son as usual but was told he was no longer there. “I asked about his where about and was told initially that he was transferred to the zonal command office in Otukpo. I went there and was told that there is no such case there. An inspector then told me that my son’s case had been transferred to State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Makurdi. I went there and discovered that no such case had been taken there. It was at this point I decided to seek legal advice’.

According to the victim’s father, one of the young men who was released told him that his son was taken out of the cell at about 4am and murdered by the Police.  After persistent inquiry about his whereabouts, they simply showed him a van conveying the corpse of Christopher.

But, reacting to the incident, Benue State Police Commissioner, Bashir Makama said he had instructed the District Police Officer of Adoka to commence investigation into the matter.
