FAO says 8.1m Nigerians under threat of food insecurity
A total of 8.1 million people are currently facing acute food insecurity in the country. A report published by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) has disclosed.
According to the report, the food crisis, which represents 9per cent of the population, may further deteriorate to 8.7 million in the next lean period of June-August 2017.
It added that the number of severely food-insecure people may rise to 11 million, as over 2million people may likely fall into emergency situation, while another 121, 000 was prone to famine.
The FAO report disclosed that 9per cent of the population would require urgent life-saving response and livelihood protection within the period.
Giving a breakdown of the figures, the report stated that about 6.2 million Nigerians (7 per cent) were in phase 3, while the 1.8 million internally displaced persons in the northeast fell under phase 4, with over 55,000 people facing famine.
It added that 18.6 million people, representing 22 per cent were under stress and require resilience-building interventions. The report further stated that 4.7 million people were in need of urgent assistance in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states.
