Falana, others seek reform of Nigeria police

Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), has again urged Federal Government to reform the Nigeria Police to curb extra–judicial killings and human rights violations in the country.

He noted that there is need for Nigeria to imbibe international best practices in human rights protection and enforcement to ensure that liberal democracy thrives.

Falana the made call at 30th anniversary lecture and book presentation of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR), titled: Chronicling The Struggle, Identifying The Way Forward, in Lagos yesterday.

He lamented that even under a democratic dispensation, it was sad that the country still experiences severe extra-judicial killings, violations of human rights and other sundry vices.

Guset Lecturer, Professor Akin Oyebode and President of CDHR, Barrister Malachy Ugwummadu, also spoke in favour reform of the nation’s security apparatuses.

“When added to the vile acts of cruelty and inhumanity to mankind brought about by insurgency and civil strife in different parts of the country, it becomes clear that Nigeria is far from claiming an excellence human rights record,” Falana added.
