Experts decry rise in child abuse, baby factories

Experts from the academia, non-governmental organisations and government agencies met in Abuja to brainstorm and proffer solution to increasing cases of baby factories, child trafficking and child abuse in Nigeria.
 
Speaking on the need to protect children by domesticating the Child Rights Act (CRA), minister of women affairs, Pauline Tallen said the effective development and implementation of policies and legal provision on the protection of the rights of children is one of the primary mandate of government therefore all states need to domesticated the CAR.

Represented by the deputy director of child development department in her ministry, Ali Andrew Madugu, Tallen said media reports about baby racketeering, proliferation of substandard homes and illegal adoptions among others calls for collective societal concern and needs urgent attention. 

Former commissioner of women affairs, Imo state and convener of the meeting, Nma Love Onyechere said Child Trust Action is currently focusing on advocacy to ensure that children, women and other vulnerable groups are given priority attention in Nigeria. This conference is tagged ‘raising the bar’ and this simply means that we need to do more in terms of our efforts to protect children’s’ rights and other vulnerable groups”.

The meeting, which is a consultative conference on protecting children and vulnerable persons organised by Child Trust Action seeks to ensure the protection of children and vulnerable groups.
