Erstwhile Commissioner for Housing in Lagos State, Mr. Bosun Jeje, has said that until the state monitors approvals granted estate developers effectively, the menace of collapsed buildings would not cease.

Jeje stated in Lagos yesterday that “it is imperative of the government” to ensure strict monitoring of building projects after issuing approval.

The former commissioner said even with government’s approval, several developers would use sub-standard materials for construction.

His words: “This is where we need to have effective monitoring of those approvals after they had got them, so that we don’t have issues of collapsed buildings again.

“The root of building collapse mostly is sub-standard materials because developers are ready to make profit at any cost by using only five bags of cement instead of 10. They are ready to compromise at any level.

“It is the duty of the monitoring aspect to ensure that right materials are used.”
