Enugu re-elects Nwoye as chairman

After the violence that marred the congress on Saturday at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu, the party leaders reconvened yesterday and re-elected Dr. Ben Nwoye as chairman.
The Guardian leant that some political thugs in the entourage of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, had allegedly disrupted the congress.
A former Senate President, Dr. Ken Nnamani, ex-governor of Enugu State, Sullivan Chime, the Director General, Voice of Nigeria (VON), Osita Okechukwu were among those who allegedly escaped attack at the venue.
Representatives of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were also not spared.
It was further leant that the driver to the state chairman of the party was wounded and rushed to the hospital.
A former commissioner in the state, Okey Ogbodo, was said to have returned to the venue and declared himself the new state chairman, claiming to have emerged from the disrupted congress.
But, Nwoye won yesterday at the well-attended re-scheduled congress at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium.
He was unanimously returned unopposed by the party members that included the National Vice Chairman of the party in the southeast, Emma Enukwu.
Other persons also elected into various positions included Chikwado Chukwunta as Deputy Chairman, Robert Eze as Secretary, and Oby Nwodo as Women leader.
Chairman of the Congress Committee, Mr. Charles Brown, explained that the peaceful conduct of the exercise showed the level of maturity and seriousness in the party.
The Director General of VON, Osita Okechukwu said: “The congress was repeated yesterday at the same venue and Ben Nwoye was validly re-elected as party chairman”
