Emir of Argungu urges farmers to repay loan
The Emir of Argungu, Smaila Muhammadu Mera, has urged rice and wheat farmers who received loans in the state to repay them to enable others to benefit from the scheme.
Mera made the appeal in his palace when some dry season farmers received a loan from Maslaha Seeds Limited in Argungu.
The monarch told the farmers not to collect an amount that they could not pay back.
‘’You should also take note that the farm inputs and the cash that you are collecting are not gifts, but loan assistance which must be paid back as agreed,” he warned.
He appealed to the youths to embrace farming as a means of livelihood and prayed for a bumper harvest and the country’s unity.
He explained: “Over 20 famers-group have benefitted from N7.5 million loan, in addition to the 1000 bags of fertilisers, which were given to them for between N8000 and N8, 500 per bag.”
The assistance also included “25 pumping machines, which were given to them at prices ranging from 40,000 to 45,000, depending on the grade.”
The proprietor of Maslaha Seed Limited, Senator Muhammad Saidu Dansadau, explained to the farmers that the loan was interest-free, which must be paid back from the proceeds of their harvests.
He promised to support them with high quality seeds and routine visits by extension workers who would monitor and advise them on modern methods of farming.
