EFCC urges court to re-assign Magu’s confirmation suit

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has asked the Federal High Court, Abuja, to transfer all cases involving the agency and its Acting Chairman, Ibrahim Magu, from Justice Binta Nyako to any other judge in the court.

The request was contained in a letter dated October 5, 2018 and addressed to the Registrar attached to Justice Nyako’s court.

In the letter of authority signed by Magu, the anti-graft agency held that the application became necessary to avoid bias and conflict of interest as the commission is currently prosecuting the spouse and step-son of His Lordship, Admiral Murtala Nyako (rtd) and Senator Abdulazeez Nyako respectively.

The commission, however, stressed that the request was not intended to malign or disparage the character of the judge.

Justice Nyako had adjourned all matters involving EFCC and its acting chairman indefinitely.

Meanwhile, the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen, has sworn in Justice Awogboro Abimbola Olawunmi as a judge of the Federal High Court.

The swearing in ceremony took place yesterday at the conference room of the CJN.

The CNJ, who stated that Awogboro’s swearing in followed the approval of her appointment by President Muhammadu Buhari, congratulated and admonished her to stick to her oath of office and oath of allegiance as well as seek advice from her brother judges, stressing that if she followed these simple principles, she will do no wrong.
