EFCC files 95-count charge against former Niger governor

Following public outcry over the arrest and continued detention of the immediate past governor of Niger State, Dr. Muazu Babangida Aliyu, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Thursday filed a 95-count charge against him at the state High Court in Minna.

The case was filed by a 14-man team from the legal department of the commission in Abuja.

Aliyu had been detained for over two weeks at the cells of the commission in Abuja since his invitation to appear and had his house and farm in Minna sealed.

EFCC operatives, it was gathered, arrived Minna about 2.15 pm on Thursday in two buses, one conveying the operatives and the other, carrying heavily armed policemen.

The operatives were at the office of the state Chief Judge, who immediately assigned the case to the second most senior Judge in the state, Justice Aliyu Maiyaki.

After about two hours in the court, the operatives drove back to Abuja.

Details of the case were not available as at press time yesterday, but a source said the charges bordered on misappropriation of public funds.

The Guardian learnt that the case might come up for mention by Tuesday.
