The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confirmed media reports that a former Comptroller-General, Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Alhaji Abdullahi Dikko, returned N1 billion to the Federal Government.

The commission’s spokesperson, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, gave the confirmation via SMS to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Saturday.

Dikko, who headed the NCS between August 2009 and August 2015, was reportedly arrested by the EFCC in June over alleged diversion of N40 billion from the agency’s coffers.

He was said to have been released due to his poor health and was expected to return more money.

Uwujaren confirmed the seizure of a property belonging to the former customs boss in the Jabi District of Abuja, saying it was under investigation.

Media reports had identified the property as a mansion worth N2 billion and located at 1 Audu Ogbe Street, Jabi, Abuja.

The EFCC spokesperson also confirmed the release of ex-Minister of State for Defence, Sen. Musiliu Obanikoro, who had been in the commission’s detention since Oct. 17.

He said that the former minister returned N100 million as reported and that the amount was being verified by the commission.

“He dropped his Nigerian and American passports, apart from being released to two sureties,’’ Uwujaren said.

Obanikoro submitted himself to the EFCC on Oct. 17 following accusations of a N4.7 billion fraud also linked to his two sons, Jide and Gbolahan.

Goodluck Jonathan’s government was full of thieves in government positions. Every regime has corrupt people, but Jonathan’s regime was the most corrupt ever in Nigeria, so now we are moving from debt free nation in 2007 to borrowing $30 billion to survive as a country! Thanks to PDP and Goodluck Jonathan the incompetent president we had…he wasted the $50 billion surplus we had in foreign reserves 2008.

These are not just thieves but criminals and lunatics. It is insane and very shameful yet the deluded Jonathanians are stil ensconced in their fake bubble. This Christmas, I wish Jonathan and his gang the same state of health as they left Nigeria.

What kind of people are we ?

Nigeria is turning into what could be described as a begging nation. A dissident group rounded up scores of female students and carted them away into the grove like the mallam’s cattle. After a while, the same group dictated conditions which the government must fulfill before only a handful of the girls were released. Government quickly fell for it and congratulated itself for a job well done.
Now the same government is negotiating with individuals who diverted national funds for personal use. Some who held back a couple of billions have to dictate to the government to accept a few millions in exchange for prosecution.
In my opinion as a professional Mediator, peaceful resolution of conflicts is always a win-win situation. However, I still doubt if the Nigerian jurisprudence properly applies the principle of plea bargaining. It seems that people are given a clean bill of health as soon as they refund a few million out of the billions taken from poor citizens. Elsewhere, people who cornered national funds are treated as enemies of the state. Should they refund every dime they took, they still get prosecuted; but given lighter sentences.
