Educators and other stakeholders in the education sector have been urged to include Universal Concept of Mental Arithmetic System (UCMAS) in their academic programmes to ensure the realisation of a generation of geniuses for the nation.

Proprietors and head of participating schools made the call at the second edition of UCMAS National Competition held in Lagos.

UCMAS, a revolutionary programme which is recognised and practiced in over 80 countries worldwide, was first introduced in the country in October 2015 for the benefits of students between ages five and 14.

Speaking on the relevance of the programme to a child’s mental and academic development, UCMAS Nigeria Country Manager, Mr. Stephen Amoako Ofori said that with its unique methodologies of stimulating and challenging the brain neurones of children, develops both the right and left hemispheres of the brain, thereby enhancing their concentration, imagination, logical reasoning, mental arithmetic skills, speed and accuracy, photographic memory, listening, creativity, visualisation and memorisation skills.

Ofori noted that the programme also helps to reduce gadget dependency in children with ripple effects of all-round academic proficiency, confidence, international exposure and certification.

“After going through the UCMAS programme, a child needs no gadget to do mental arithmetic from single and double digits of about 10 rows to 100 rows involving all operations,” he said.

He added that the programme aids children to improve on their concentration, speed and accuracy, focus and solve questions without difficulty.

“Mathematics plays a vital role, we are touching on this aspect to help improve in whole brain development of a child,” he said.

Ofori called on schools and parents not to lose hope in their children, but to enroll them in the UCMAS whole brain development programme to help discover the genius within them.

He said: “When both the right and left hemispheres of the brain are developed, the genius within a child is discovered.”

The country Manager also urged corporate organisations and philanthropists to sponsor students for the annual UCMAS National and International competitions.

At the event attended by over 600 students, 250 children who emerged winners in their respective categories won trophies, medals, and certificates after answering with speed and accuracy, 200 mental arithmetic questions within 8 minutes.
