Educationist urges government to provide grants for private schools

Director, Cuddly Kids School, Amuwo Odofin, Lagos, Mrs. Anuri Obijiaku, has appealed to the Federal Government to assist private school owners with grants to enable them to function optimally.

This, she said can be done by setting up academic, social and moral standards, which would in turn reward schools that meet and exceed the benchmark through the grants.

Obijiaku pointed out that the idea would spur schools to produce pupils who would not only turn out to be balanced individuals but highly competitive.

She said: “Government have a big role to play in repositioning education in the country. Firstly, there should be a reward system in place and platforms that help schools to access grants. This can be done by coming up with propositions or target such that once a school meets it; such institutions would be able to have access to grants. Government should also ensure that schools maintain certain standards, which would invariable make owners prioritise quality. When this is done, the country would benefit greatly.”

She also called on government at all levels to soft pedal on policies that are harsh on schools to enable them operate, train and produce quality leaders.

Obijiaku said the school on its part, is committed to providing quality teaching and learning that would inculcate in children analytical, soft and hard skills.

“Education is considered as the best legacy that can be given to any child in order to secure a brighter future. Hence, it is crucial to provide such legacy, which shall satisfy local and international demands, thereby moving the child a step higher. Ultimately, it is our goal that our pupils would advance into the world as positive contributors in the society, prepared to realise their full potentials.

She added, “education has always been the key to a successful future. Moreso today, children need to be prepared with a solid foundation of basics and strategies to investigate, learn and think about topics in depth. The balance of our programmes helps ensure that each student is well prepared not only for higher education but also for a successful and rewarding life.”

On the state of education in the country, she said, “there are obvious lapses in our nation’s educational system in meeting international standard. This is part of the reason why some parents send their children abroad for studies. It is in view of these and a resolve to bridge the gap that we came on board.

While urging parents to make themselves available for their wards, Obijiaku said, “ our experience has shown that children who do better in their academics have their parents support and input. Others who are naturally intelligent but have no support from their busy parents are usually timid. Parents must create time to get involved in their children’s education as this helps a lot.
