Edo to revive Nigerian Observer, other state-owned media

Edo State government is working tirelessly to revive state-owned media outfits for efficiency and to boost workers’ productivity through training and re-training.

Governor Godwin Obaseki stated this yesterday when newly-elected chairman of the correspondents chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Edo Council chairperson, Nefishetu Yakubu, and his executive committee paid him a courtesy visit in Government House in Benin City.

He said: “Our goal is to reposition Edo as an information hub in this part of the world, and we are working to resuscitate the state-owned Nigerian Observer and Edo Broadcasting service (EBS).”

According to him, the Nigerian Observer will be spit into two components, the Printing Press and the Publishing Company, while the Midwest Newspapers Limited would also be restructured. The governor said that he did not believe in retrenchment of workers, but giving them the opportunity to improve themselves through training and re-training.

“The members of staff of these media outfits will be re-trained on digital reportage and publishing,” Obaseki said.
