Edo monarch seeks single chamber National Assembly

The Otaru of Auchi, Haliru Momoh, Ikelebe III, has canvassed a single chamber national legislature and an expanded National Council of State (NCS) to resolve the constant leadership crisis in the country.

His call follows increasing agitations from different segments suggesting various models of restructuring.

Speaking to journalists yesterday on the state of the nation and sundry issues, Momoh said the national assembly should have only the House of Representatives that would comprise elected representatives of people with good character and standing in their various constituencies.

The Council of State, he said, should be expanded to incorporate notable traditional and religious leaders from the six geo-political zones and the Federal Capital Territory to oversee the affairs of the country and hold regular meetings once a month.

The Council of State, he added, should act as an Ombudsman to phase out the Senate and work with only the House of Representatives, since, according to him, the Senate as presently constituted, is not relevant to the wellbeing of the nation.

The Otaru said the president should call for a referendum in this wise, saying that the people will massively support him, because they are actually tired of the activities of the national assembly.

He added that the process of electing the national leadership should also be employed to elect governors and local council in an open and without party affiliations.

Momoh pointed out that the present challenges of leadership in the country was orchestrated by the selfish, crude and anti-people activities of the political class, saying the process of selecting leadership of the country was often corrupt and undemocratic.

“Up till now, Nigerians have had no choice, but to vote for questionable persons as their leaders and representatives,” he stated.
