In response to agitation by students, Ebonyi State Governor David Umahi has reduced the fees of the state university students by N10, 000.

The previous administration decided to increase fees payable at the university, a development that sparked off protests by the students.

Announcing the reduction on Friday, during an interactive forum with the management and staff of the university at the permanent site, Ezzamgbo, Umahi explained that the new fee schedule would take effect from next year for both students of Ebonyi origin and non-Ebonyians.

It would be recalled that prior to the slash, non-indigenes were paying N128, 000, while indigenous students pay N87, 000.

“Now, there is going to be conditional reduction of school fees. If there is any case of cultism, I reverse it. So, I reduce every body’s school fee, both indigenes and non-indigenes by the sum of N10, 000,” the governor stated.

Umahi, had while making his remarks, noted that the reduction was necessary, because students of the university paid almost the highest fees in the Southeast and South-South, explained that the slash was to cushion the suffering of the students and their parents.

He, however, enjoined the students to avoid cultism and criminal tendencies in order to continue to enjoy the tuition reduction.
