Following a repeat earth tremor in Maitama area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), a group, Heart of the Mother Foundation (HOMEF), has urged the Federal Government to stop rock mining in the capital city.

The group, which attributed the tremor to indiscriminate blasting of rocks, said the  tremors were clear signals that mining in Abuja must stop. It is a shame that we continue to ignore the warnings of nature in the mindless pursuit of cash,” the statement signed by its Director, Ninmo Bassey, said.

“Now is the time for government to take a stand on the side of life and not corporate profits. Save Abuja, save Nigerians, protect our environment.”

He said it was unfortunate that the suspension was lifted only after a few weeks and wondered why, and in whose interest should the blasting and mining activities continue at expense of peoples’ lives.
