In its quest to drive its health, safety and environment mantra, Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), has made known its resolve to address key challenges in the oil and gas sector like oil/gas pollution, carbon emissions and industry accidents, among others.

Deputy Director, Health, Safety and Environment, DPR, Musa Zagi, disclosed this in Lagos at a pre-event press conference of the agency’s HSE conference billed to hold in Lagos next week, adding that they would ensure operators in the industry comply with set rules with a view to organising inherent risks as well as evolve standards in the sector.

Worried by the spate of accidents in the downstream end of the industry, the DPR said it was considering stringent actions against indiscriminate citing of gas stations in residential areas and the unruly activities of tanker drivers in the country. Zagi reiterated the agency’s commitment to upholding health, safety and environment standards in the nation’s oil and gas industry in line with international safety requirements, saying the safety of lives and property remained germane to the DPR.

With the theme, “Driving Sustainability in the Oil and Gas Industry through Improved Stakeholders’ Environmental Stewardship,’ he explained that the conference serves to engender HSE awareness amongst stakeholders in the industry and still remains the biggest forum that brings HSE experts from both within and outside the country to share new ideas and experiences on HSE issues.
