Don’t give us money, we want development, Kaduna youths tell government
Kaduna State youths, under the auspices of Kaduna Youth Agenda (KYA) have called on public office holders to stop the ugly tradition of dishing out money to constituents and focus on developing their constituencies.
They made the call during the first KYA quarterly policy dialogue, supported by the National Democratic Institute (NDI), United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the United Kingdom Agency for International Development (UKAID).
One of the participants, Yakubu Shuaib said instead of doling out money to constituents that regularly pay them courtesy visits, public officials should do things that will outlive their tenure, such as infrastructural and human development.
He also called for the need to educate constituents on how to advocate for their basic needs, instead of going from one council chairman to the other, seeking financial assistance.
“The idea of begging chairmen and representatives for money will not help in solving our problems in any way. We should demand that our dilapidated schools and hospitals be rebuilt and new roads constructed,” he said.
The Executive Director of One Project Africa, who is the lead implementing partner of KYA, Mrs. Zigwai Ayuba called for inclusion of youths below the age of 35 in governance, in terms of budget processing, implementation and every other aspect of administration.
