Delta varsity shuns lawmakers’ invitation

Delta state lawmakers and authorities of the Delta State University (DELSU) may be heading for a faceoff following the refusal of the later to honour an invitation of the State House of Assembly investigating the alleged withholding of the results of a former student and the expulsion of two female students.

Member representing Ethiope East, Mr. Evance Ivwurie had at last week’s sitting presented the two petitions from his constituency, an action that prompted the Speaker, Hon. Monday Igbuya to direct the Committee on Public Petitions to investigate the matter.

When the committee members met yesterday the petitioners were present but neither the Vice Chancellor Prof. Victor Peretomode, nor his representatives were available to defend the university authorities.

The committee has, however, fixed a new date to hear the petition, expressing reservations over the university authority’s failure to honour their invitation.

Ivwurie, who assured that the House would investigate the petitions in line with relevant laws, expressed concern that the university did not follow due process before taking sensitive decisions that bothered on the students.

One of the petitioners, Mr. Solomon EjiroTedjere wrote that the school victimised him and unjustly withheld his result five years after graduation based on an alleged publication inciting students without evidence.
