Ughelli mapAbout five days after policemen and soldiers invaded Effurun public Motor Park in Uvwie local council, Delta State, and forcibly removed the park leadership setting off hordes of protesting armed youths that paralysed economic activities in parts of the council, the Chairman of the council, Henry Baro Minabowanre, has been suspended indefinitely by the House of Assembly.

The senior assistant on media and publicity to the Uvwie Council chairman, Jere Hilary, who confirmed the developed when contacted yesterday said that the matter would soon be resolved as the chairman was making all effort to ensure the issues were settled.

Prior to the invasion of the motor park by policemen some councillors had accused the Uvwie Council chairman of involving in anti party activity that he supported an SDP candidate for the State House of Assembly Election who eventually won the election instead of the PDP candidate.

It was also alleged that some members of the legislative arm who opposed the council chairman’s anti party activities were harassed and beaten by thugs of the chairman.

The councillors who did not work with him (council chairman) to deliver the SDP candidate were victimised. They also accused the chairman of the council of not paying some members of the house their salaries while those loyal to him had been paid.

However, Jere Hilary said these allegations were untrue. He also said that the legislative arm of the Uvwie Council suspended some of its members for making attempts to impeach the leader of the House and that this was made public with radio and television announcements by the legislative arm of the Uvwie council.

Jere said that the Chairman of the Uvwie Council, Baro Henry Minabowanre, was a peace loving man and had never sponsored any persons to assault anyone.

He stressed that the chairman never participated in any anti party activity and had no intention to do such and that he was a strong PDP loyalist. He added that it was not only Uvwie LGA that experienced loss of House of Assembly election to opposition parties.

“As a matter of fact, it is very painful that we lost that election. It is pertinent to also note that the Uvwie Local Government Chairman, Baro Henry Minabowanre led the PDP in Uvwie to victory during the House of Representatives election. This victory produced Evelyn Oboro as a returning member of the National Assembly,” he said
