Cultural fiesta to unite Indians in Nigeria takes place in Lagos

To foster unity among Indians residing in Lagos State and Nigeria, the Overseas Friends of Bhartiya Janta Party (OFBJP), the ruling party in India, at the weekend celebrated Dusseher (Vijayadashmi) UTSAV at Geeta Ashram in Lagos.

To foster unity among Indians residing in Lagos State and Nigeria, the Overseas Friends of Bhartiya Janta Party (OFBJP), the ruling party in India, at the weekend celebrated Dusseher (Vijayadashmi) UTSAV at Geeta Ashram in Lagos.

President, OFBJP, Sanjay Srivastava, said the idea of the cultural festival was to bring all Indians living in the state and country together to celebrate their cultural heritage, build harmony, remind them of their rich culture by bringing them all together to celebrate the event.

Noting that the cultural fiesta, the fourth in series, is celebrated annually; to bring harmony among the people and get rid of evil among them, Srivastava added that a statue, which is a symbol of evil among them was burnt at night to signify its end in their midst.

The Secretary, OFBJP, Pravin Kumar, said it was also to remember the 10th day of war between Lord Rama and Ravana, in which Lord Rama won based on truth. It is a very important event in India, as many festivals were celebrated last month.

He noted that the festival was to make the Indians have a feeling and remembrance of their culture. Speaking on the relationship between Nigerians and Indians, Kumar said that the two countries have cordial cultural ties, adding that it is also to leave a legacy for the future generation of Indians to remember their culture. He urged all Indians living in Nigeria to obey its host country’s laws, rules and regulations, foster unity among the people and maintain a cordial relationship with one another.

Srivavsata noted that as part of the ceremony, they cleaned their hands, houses and surroundings to ensure they are healthy and safe to receive the goddess of wealth and prosperity.
