Cross River workers protest against early payment of salary
Workers in Cross River State, during the May Day celebration yesterday at the U.J. Esuene Stadium in Calabar, protested the payment of their May salaries on the first day of the month, barely a week after paying that of the previous month.
Chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in the state, Clarkson Otu, said workers and the leadership of labour were not happy over the early payment of salaries by the state government.
He called on Governor Ben Ayade to discontinue the superhighway project and concentrate on other issues rather than deducting N300 million every month for 180 years from the state’s coffers.
He also said that Nigerian workers were the most impoverished in Africa and called on the federal government to improve on their welfare.
According to the labour leader, though the government means well, labour is not happy with the situation.
