Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has been advised to work with the University of PortHarcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) and its Chief Medical Director, Prof. Henry Ugboma, to expedite testing and containment measures against the spread of coronavirus in the state.

A chieftain of the state chapter of All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, who gave the advice in a statement made available to The Guardian, also condemned the governor’s sudden decision to lift the lockdown in the state to allow his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to inaugurate its state executive committee.

Describing as hypocrisy the relaxation of the lockdown just to allow PDP inaugurate its State Executive Council and to organise a Thanksgiving service today, Eze dismissed Wike’s claim that the measure was to give any respite to the suffering masses.

Eze, who is also the former Spokesman of the erstwhile nPDP, also upbraided the organisers of the PDP event for disobeying Wike’s Executive Order on social distancing by bringing more than 50 people in a hall with a space of 1.5 to 2 meters.

He stated: “With this blatant disregard for the COVID 19 directive and the governor’s directive, I ask the governor, who will quarantine the disobedient party members, who have by that event put the lives of Rivers State people in danger and who will auction their vehicles as he did to others that flouted his order?

“I will like to know also if the Obi Wali Cultural Centre venue, which was built by Chibuike Amaechi will be dismantled for hosting such an event to demonstrate how powerful the governor is.”

While appealing to the people to comply with safety measures and directives from health professionals and always report suspected cases to avoid community spread of the pandemic in Rivers state, the APC chieftain expressed satisfaction with the commitment exhibited by Prof. Henry Ugboma, the UPTH CMD.
