A Federal High Court, sitting in Enugu, has reserved judgment in the N50 billion suit filed by goat traders against the state government. The traders had gone to court to challenge the unlawful closure of their market after a policeman was killed there last year.

They are praying the court, presided over by Justice Rosemary Dugbo Oghoghorie, to declare that the 48-hour relocation ultimatum given to them was a violation of their fundamental rights.

They also prayed the court to order the payment of N50 billion, being exemplary, punitive, aggravated, special and general damages against the government.Represented by their counsel, Olu Omotayo, the traders further sought a declaration that the forcible takeover of the market, the three mosques and other places of worship therein, amounted to an infringement on their rights to worship.

The court had on January 18, ordered an accelerated hearing after the applicants’ counsel complained of the suffering being faced by the traders.

He argued that majority of them lived in the market before the closure, adding that many of them were now sleeping in open places. She urged the two parties to find an amicable solution to the crisis, adding that she would rule on the matter on April 10, 2017 if government fail to resolve the dispute.
