Court jails man for five months over illicit drugs possession
A FEDERAL High Court in Lagos yesterday sentenced a young man, Ogbonna Succeeder, 24, to five months imprisonment for unlawfully being in possession of 2.7 kilogrammes of Cannabis Sativa, popularly known as marijuana.
The convict, according to the National Drug Laws Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) prosecutor, Mr. J. I. Aernan, was arrested at the popular Katangwa market, Abule-Egba on March 23, at about 10:00 am.
Justice Mohammed Idris, consequently pronounced the accused guilty as charged, and sentenced him to five months imprisonment
The charge against the convict reads: “That you Ogbonna Succeeder, 24 years old, on or about March 23, 2015, at Katangwa market, Abule-Egba, within the jurisdiction of this honourable court, without lawful authority, dealt in 2.7 kilograms of Cannabis Sativa, thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under 11(c) of the NDLEA Act cap N30, laws of the federation of Nigeria, 2004”.
The convict pleaded guilty to the charge. Consequently, the prosecutor, J. I. Aernan, read the facts of the case to the court and urged the court to convict and sentence the accused accordingly.
The trial judge, Justice Mohammed Idris, consequently pronounced the accused guilty as charged, and sentenced him to five months imprisonment with hard labour.
