Councilor, four others arrested over kidnap of Governor Bello’s mother

The police high command yesterday paraded former councilor in Okene Local Council of Kogi State, Iliyasu Suleiman, and four others over the kidnap of Governor Yahaya Bello’s mother in 2014.

The suspects are, Suleiman, 44, who is the gang leader; Danjuma Ibrahim, 26, alias Apayi/Senate; Iliyasu Obadaki, 35, alias Doctor; Alhaji Nasiru, 43; and Hafiz Yakubu, 26; while Mohammed Jamiu, alias Bomboy, was killed in a gun duel by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

Parading the suspects yesterday in Abuja, Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), Jimoh Moshood, said sequel to the IGP’s directive on the kidnapping in Abuja, Niger and Kogi states, operatives of the IGP Intelligence Response Team swung into action after they have arrested Danladi Ibrahim, alias Apayi in a follow-up to his confession on several robberies and kidnappings in the three states.

Items recovered from them include two AK 47 rifles, 20 life cartridges, one army camouflage inner wear, two army camouflage pair of trousers, two army camouflage caps, one black Barrette, two plastic gun, three sharp knives, one axe and assorted charms.

Moshood noted that all the suspects arrested confessed to the kidnapping of Governor Yahaya Bello’s mother in 2014 and many other robberies and kidnappings, stressing that efforts were being intensified to arrest other fleeing members of the gang and they will be charged to court on completion of investigation.

One of the suspects, who is also the gang leader, Iliyasu Suleiman, in an interview with journalists, said he was a local government councilor in Okene between 2008-2011, stressing that he was the one that masterminded the kidnap of Bello’s mother.

Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, has commenced a new tactical squad named ‘Operation Absolute Sanity’ to rid kidnappers off the ever busy Abuja-Kaduna highway.

Moshood said the IGP deployed a Joint Police Team comprising Special Police Force, Police Mobile Force, Counter Terrorism Squad, Anti-Kidnapping Units, Intelligence Response Team, Special Tactical Squad, the Force Intelligence Branch, the Police Mobile Force with Headquarters at Rijanah, Kaduna State.

According to him, police helicopters will also embark on aerial surveillance and guided missions to assist the operation Absolute Sanity’s personnel on the ground in covering difficult terrains.
