Copyright officials arrest four, seize pirated materials worth N2.3m in Enugu

THE Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) at the weekend seized pirated optical discs valued N2.3million in a raid that took officials of the agency to various parts of Enugu and environs.

Arrested in the raid carried out by Copyright inspectors led by Mr.P. O. Anagonye covering Gariki Market, Uwani, Obiagu and Asata areas, were four suspects, who allegedly specialise in patronising and distributing pirated contrivances.

Zonal Director of NCC, Enugu, Mrs. Ngozi Okeke, who briefed reporters after the exercise, said the commission would continue to protect every genuine effort of Nigerians against piracy.

She stated that officials of the commission, in line with their mandate, would continue to “regulate and enforce copyright laws as well as key into the change agenda of President Muhammadu Buhari.”

She, therefore, called on residents of the state to support the commission in the fight against piracy, lamenting that those who engaged in them most times attack enforcement officers.

She said that within the last eight months, about nine persons had been arrested for allegedly pirating the works of others, adding that the matters were at present in court.

Okeke said that with the renewed vigour in their enforcement, she was sure that piracy had reduced to the barest minimum in the state.
