Clerics task FG on insecurity, Dapchi, Chibok girls

President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Rev. Samson Ayokunle, has asked the Muhammadu Buhari administration to decisively tackle the insecurity in the land.

Addressing reporters at the weekend in Jos, he condemned the wanton killings and destruction of property in parts of the federation.

Ayokunle, who was in the city to officiate the induction of the new rector of Baptist Theological College, disclosed that the institution was a well structural system where ministers had trained on sound theological knowledge for the proper propagation of the gospel.

He said: “We have a ministerial and training board. The former sees to the way the ministers conduct themselves after graduation.

The latter looks into how the colleges of theology keep close to the tenets and also how the students and the pastors-in-training behave themselves.”

Commending the current administration for its efforts thus far, he, however, noted that more needed to be done in terms of security, adding that the killings in the land must stop.

The avoidable bloodletting, Ayokunle noted, could be tamed if perpetrators were apprehended to face the full wrath of the law.

The cleric went on: “This is a concern and to some of us a sin in the 21st century, it is a big challenge to this government.”

He stressed the need for increased intelligence service to monitor and curb activities of terrorists and other violent groups as obtained in developed countries as well as probe the sources of their supplies.

Also, the United Church of Christ in Nations (aka HEKAN) has urged the Federal Government to resolve the incessant farmers/herders clashes and effect the immediate release of the remaining Dapchi and Chibok girls.

Addressing the 52nd yearly convention of the church at its national secretariat in Kaduna yesterday, the president, Reverend Amos Kiri, said the Buhari government needs to be proactive on the security of lives and property nationwide.

He noted that the clashes, leading to the destruction of lives and property, had impacted negatively on every sphere of life.

His words: “May I use this medium to commend the Federal Government on its effort in containing the insecurity facing this great country. For years now, killings of innocent souls have been the order of the day.

“Herdsmen/farmers clashes have claimed too many lives. Nigeria has become a fearful place to live in because you could be kidnapped and attacked in the farm or even in your house by hoodlums/bandits.

“I call on the government, both at federal and state levels, to intensify security and save the lives and property of citizens.”
