corruptionThe Bishop of Wusasa Diocese of Anglican Communion, Rt. Revd Ali Buba Lamido has denied advocating death sentence for corrupt officials in the country.

Lamido, who made the denial in a statement in Zaria yesterday, explained that there was no time he advocated for capital punishment for Nigerian legislators who are found to be corrupt.

The statement reads in part “Our attention has been drawn to a publication in some newspapers and social media attributing to us an opinion we deemed mischievous and muddled.

“It attributes to us views and opinions we have never entertained or expressed. We are no less amused by some of the vituperation, invectives and dubious diversionary connotations on the motive of our charge.”.

According to the cleric, “The story has it that we advocated death sentence for corrupt officials. We wish to state in very clear term that we have never advocated for death sentence for any crime. For the avoidance of doubt, what we said in our charge was that
government should confront corruption headlong. Anyone caught in corrupt acts should have all his or her property and accounts forfeited to the government in addition to jail sentence”.

“We feel corruption is more dangerous than nuclear weapons. It is instructive that all the media houses that published that story were nowhere close to the venue of our Synod. We are surprised that none of them called us to verify the veracity or otherwise of the report”.

“We feel that press men should have the culture of verifying a story before reporting it. We wish to state, for the umpteenth time, that we have never pushed for capital punishment and will never do that.”
