Chairman of Oru-West Council of Traditional Rulers, Eze Victor Okeukwu, has ruled out the chances of Christian leaders outlawing the age-long Osu caste system in Igboland.

Chairman of Oru-West Council of Traditional Rulers, Eze Victor Okeukwu, has ruled out the chances of Christian leaders outlawing the age-long Osu caste system in Igboland.

Speaking to The Guardian in his palace yesterday, the Ubulu community monarch accused Christians of paying lip service towards abolishing the practice, claiming that most leaders of the faith had prevented their relatives from marrying those tagged Osu.

According to him, it is not enough for clerics to preach against the custom on the pulpit or advise their members to overlook the Osu lineage while choosing their life partners.

Eze Okeukwu argued that until the traditional rulers in the region come together and perform the necessary rituals, the tradition would not fade away.
