Chinese woman remanded in prison for allegedly burning hotel

For allegedly burning down a hotel and damaging the property, a Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja has remanded a 47-year-old Chinese woman, Zhen Zhen, in the Kirikiri Female Prison.
   
The presiding judge, Justice Hakeem Oshodi, gave the order following her plea on the one count charge of arson that was interpreted to her by Mr. Kennedy Kenneth as she claim she does not understand English Language.
   
When the charge was read to her, Zhen responded that: “I cannot say yes or no to the charge.”The prosecution said that the defendant committed the offence on July 5, 2015 at Ernest Place, a hotel located at No. 28, Bamishile Street, Allen Avenue, Lagos. 
   
The prosecution alleged that the defendant willfully set fire to the building of Mr. Ernest Uwaneyem and destroyed part of the building. The defendant was said to have violated Section 341 of the Criminal Law of Lagos 2011.
   
The judge subsequently adjourned the case till March 28, 2018 for trial. It was gathered that the defendant has been in the women’s wing of the Kirikiri Prisons since 2015 when the incident occurred.
