To fight the deadly cancer disease, CancerAware Nigeria, a non-governmental organisation , has donated chemotherapy medications and other cancer treatment drugs worth N1 million to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH).

The donations were made inline with the organisation’s major aim of reducing cancer, especially in women through education, advocacy and patient support.

According to the Executive Director, CancerAware Nigeria, Tolulope Falowo, “We focus on breast and cervical cancer and also stand as a voice for cancer control in Nigeria through awareness campaigns, screening, support and policy development agenda.”
Falowo also commended the Breast Clinic in LUTH for its efforts to reduce and treat cancer cases in the country.

“We work closely with the Department of Radiotherapy and Oncology in LUTH. We can only complement it with our own supports and that is why we are donating chemotherapy medications and drugs worth N1million”.

In the same vein, the Chief Medical Director, LUTH, Prof. Chris Bode represented by Prof. Lanre Adeyemo expressed the management’s happiness in the donations.

“We can assure you that these drugs will be judiciously used for the patients especially the indigents and the less privileged patients”, he added.

He also advised the public, especially the women on the need to always go for screenings adding that cancer is best cured through prevention and early detection.

Meanwhile, Professor of Radiation Oncology in the University of Lagos and also a consultant to LUTH, Prof. Abayomi Durosinmi Etti, charged the government to improve measures to reduce the cost of treating cancer and other deadly diseases.

Etti lamented the high cost of treating cancer, which “many cannot afford”.

He, however, praised CancerAware Nigeria which he labelled a model for others to emulate in the struggle against cancer.

Community outreach on cancer awareness is sponsored by the organization is ongoing in different communities in the state.
