Tragedy struck, yesterday, in Ado Ekiti, as a mini-bus, popularly called ‘Akoto,’ killed three pupils about 2.30pm at Ilokun, a farmstead along Ado-Iworoko road in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital.

The incident occurred on a day primary and secondary school students vacated for Christmas and New Year festivities across the state.

An eyewitness said the pupils were returning from school and were about crossing the Ado-Iworoko-Ifaki highway when the vehicle, which was coming from the Ekiti State University (EKSU) hit them.

Three of them died instantly, while others sustained injuries.

The source said the deceased and the injured were taken to hospital, while their families converged on the spot and wept profusely over the loss of the students.

It was gathered that some sympathisers also wept, describing the incident as a disaster to the state.

The state Police Command Public Relations Officer, Sunday Abutu, could not be reached for confirmation of the incident, as his mobile phone was switched off.

But his Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) counterpart, Mohammed Olowo, said the Command had not been briefed about the accident as press time, adding: “But we are mobilising our men to the axis to confirm what actually happened.”
